Cardiovascular disease is now the commonest cause of premature mortality and morbidity around the world and more so among South Asians. A unique ethnic group in whom multiple risk factors seem to be responsible for the increasingly high rates of coronary heart disease.

Published scientific studies suggest those high levels of small dense LDL, triglycerides, homocysteine, lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) and low levels of HDL (especially of HDL2b subfraction) with or without diabetes and abdominal obesity may be the major contributors of risk.
